While it seems like a long time ago now, the VVU enjoyed visiting the Christmas Holiday Club at Yellow Door on Canvey Island on the 22 December.
More than 25 young people aged 11 to 16 attended the holiday club and participated in a range of activities such as baking, crafts, dodge ball and football. Spirits were really high and there was lots of laughter in the building.
Staff at Yellow Door were in the kitchen busy preparing for Christmas dinner which they were hosting on the 23 Dec. All the young people and staff were going to sit down to a full Christmas dinner with all the trimmings. They were planning games and music for during the meal, with the young people being able to spend the day with their friends enjoying a festive experience they might not necessarily get at home.
We spoke to one of the project’s young volunteers, aged 15, who said: “I’ve been a young volunteer within the sports activities section for just over two months now and it’s one of the best things I’ve done. I get to do something I love but also help other people at the same time. I get to make new friends. It gets me out of the house and everyone is like one big family here at Yellow Door. In three words I would describe my experience as helpful, encouraging and (so much) fun!”
